Well, I guess he authorized those changes in that he allowed them to go forward with them for that production, but I think he's said it was just as an experiment since the creative team of that production wanted to do those things.

I recently noted that in Laurents's book Mainly on Directing (which I don't have a copy of though I just ordered one), Laurents talks about how during previews of his final Broadway production of Gypsy a man whose opinions on theatre he greatly respects sent him a message (via email, IIRC) in which he tore the production apart. Laurents thought about it for a bit, then decided the man was wrong.

Given that there don't seem to be all that many people whose opinions on theatre he greatly respected, I wondered who this was. My first thought was that it was Hal Prince. But a friend with whom I discussed this did not think it was Prince. He thought that it might have been Sondheim, given what Sondheim wrote on page 77 (near the bottom of the third column) of Finishing the Hat about Laurents's productions of the show.

I'm certainly not convinced that it was Sondheim, but if it was, that didn't stop him from showing up at the closing performance and going onstage and seeming happy. (Or so I've been told. I wasn't there.)

Btw, this friend loved the production so it's not that he wanted to put it down or to endorse what may have been Sondheim's opinion.
