I think the four principals should be around 50, for the the reasons AlanScott states. I think Carlotta should be around the same age or a little younger only because there's dialogue about how she still has a very active casual sex life with (I believe she says or implies) younger men, and it can be a bit unseemly when those lines are delivered by someone in her 60s or 70s. But, off the top of my head, I can't think of any reason why all of the other characters can't be considerably older, seeing as how we're told that the Follies were produced for many years.
