Hmm, I don't know about Sondheim saying that. Lapine, as Alan notes in his notes,said something to that effect and Sondheim claims he never even read Bettelheim.
It is fairly obvious that Lapine had read him and by the time ITW was written, Bettelheim was in major disregard on many fronts.
Other than that, who knows? "No One is Alone" does appear, to me at least, to be strongly influenced by Jung. In a rather obvious way actually.
