I wouldn't argue that Bettelheim had no influence on Lapine. I suspect even he wouldn't deny it, even if he might say that it was primarily a negative influence. Obviously, ideas of Bettelheim's were in the air, and might have influenced Sondheim indirectly. Not to mention that any influence Bettelheim's work might have had on Lapine, even if would downplay it, would inevitably find its way to some degree into Sondheim's work. On the other hand, Bettelheim's ideas were not entirely original to him. And when Sondheim goes about denying the influence of Bettelheim, he has usually done so in response to a question about it, with the questioner seeming to think that The Uses of Enchantment was a very direct and consciously employed source of ideas. Which it wasn't, at least as far as Sondheim was concerned. Understandably, he addressed it in Look, I Made a Hat since the misconception is so widely out there (and showed up again in at least a few reviews of the film). I knew nothing about Parker and Lolita. Glad that you mentioned it. Found the New York Magazine article. Very interesting.
