Simply doesn't work when performed by a younger actor. I've heard it done in cabaret settings by women in their mid-40s and it's a mere exercise in lyric interpretation. It's one of those songs that requires a lived-in persona, the lyrics almost stand out as footnotes, annotating the presence before us. It's one reason why for me the Ann Miller performance of the song -- leaving out her interpretive skill or vocal power -- has such emotional gravitas. Ann Miller makes each lyric sound autobiographical, without an ounce of effort. Her confidence in her attack only adds.

I think a film Carlotta needs at least Miller's weight. That would leave Shirley McLaine, who sang it already in "Postcards From the Edge."
