Thanks so much for your explanations, but most or all of them only make it clear to me that what we have here is a case of a film version of a show exacerbating some very problematic writing in the original. As for what you wrote about the witch losing her powers -- "When it happens is made clear in the show. It happens simultaneously with her transformation (though it is perhaps a bit odd that she doesn't seem to realize it for more than nine months)" -- I would say it's more than a bit odd that she doesn't realize it for nine months or so. It's very sloppy writing, and I'm not surprised audiences are confused. Also, in the show version, whether the witch is literally supposed to be the witch at the end of the show or just Bernadette Peters, I still think it's weird that she sings "children will listen, children will listen" when she previously made such a point that "children WON'T listen," even if we can maybe understand the different meanings implied.
