One possibly interesting way to reset the show in the present day would be making it about a reunion of cast members of 70's/early 80's gay revue of the sort described by the character Paul in A CHORUS LINE.

Instead of 1941, have the last edition of the show be in 1981 and recast all the roles as gay men.

It, of course, would never be allowed and probably shouldn't be. But, if some writer was up to it, such a show could be an interesting "response" to FOLLIES.
