I wonder if Emily Whitman might have been a choreographer and/or dance captain for the Follies as well as (or after) being a featured performer with her husband. Of course, nothing is stated about such a thing, but it would explain why she's able to jump into a number (or try to) that she certainly would never have danced originally. I don't know how common it was then for performers to segue into other jobs around the theatre. Speaking of which, I've always found Carlotta to be an interesting character in the sense that she is the only "girl" whose fortunes rose after the closing of the Follies. She was a chorus girl whose one chance to break out of the line resulted in failure, as per the story she tells prior to "I'm Still Here," but who went on to become a movie and tv star. All of the other chorus girls and featured performers whose lives we glimpse (and there are several about whom we find out nothing but their names) either moved into other professions (Stella, Solange) or faded into retirement and obscurity (Hattie, Heidi, Emily). Carlotta is the one who made it.
