But the Depression went on well into the '30s. Note how in You Can't Take It WIth You, which opened in December 1936, Grandpa asks Kirby, "Are we pretty well out of the Depression?" and Kirby's answer is a bit iffy (things are better but "it all depends"). The WPA was active until 1943. The worst of the Depression may have been over by 1936, but it was certainly not completely over. And as noted by pierce below, lots of people got started in show business very young then. It's not at at unlikely that Carlotta was dancing in her scanties at 15 or so. So a Carlotta born in 1919 might well have been dancing in her scanties at 15 in 1934. The only thing that really makes me think she might be a bit older is the "big financier" line. But a big financier certainly might have a teenage mistress. Not unheard of at all. So if she was born in, say, 1918, she could well have snared her big financier in 1934 or 1935, when things were still pretty bad.
