Not Boring at All

THE RIVER has a poetic, meandering feel to it. It's less plot-centric than a deeply felt meditation on how difficult it is for some people to make a true connection with another person. That is its beauty (aside from Hugh Jackman, of course). There's also a fair bit of light-heartedness in early scenes that elicits laughs and helps us get to know the women in fisherman Jackman's life--and understand his real passion.

Meandering is never good on stage. That's this play's problem, it doesn't have any conflict or urgency. It feels poetic because of the This Is Art manner in which it is staged and spoken by the actors. There isn't much Beauty on that stage. There is a helluva lot of Pretense to Art (and Bad Acting as well).
