Matthew Murray takes a look at The Woodsman:

Thanks to Wicked, L. Frank Baum has been having a serious post-death resurgence — well, sort of. The Winnie Holzman-Stephen Schwartz musical may be phenomenally successful, but it’s not exactly canonical in terms of the characters that Baum created once upon a time. (Its source, after all, was the same titled novel by Gregory Maguire.) To dig into the original background of these delightful figures, you have to go back to the turn-of-the-20th-century novels themselves; or, in the case of one of the best known, at the very least stop by the fascinating and frequently captivating The Woodsman, which just opened at 59E59. . . .
