Ramin Karimloo not in Les Miz Jan 17...Disappointed- What to do?

Posted by: GValley 05:33 pm EST 01/19/15

I waited to see Ramin Karimloo in Les Miz Jan 17 Matinee. Understudy was there (even though Telecahrge schedule said Ramin would be there). I could understand that people are out sometimes but Ramin played the evening performance that day. Extremely disappointed and upset. Box office was not helpful...told me to contact Cameron Mackintosh. So far, no luck. Left after intermission. Walpole had nice voice but doesn't command the stage like Ramin. What should I do? Help! Frustrated!

It probably doesn't help that you stayed through intermission, although I understand why you did. But I would think it will be hard to get a ticket for another performance when you stayed through intermission but left because you were disappointed by the understudy.

If you had not stayed for the show, it would probably still somewhat depend, as mentioned below, on how you bought the ticket.

It's what Judge Judy would say as "you ate the steak already" by eating (or in this case watching a big portion of it) and now you want your money back (or another steak/ticket).

I have to add that I know a lot of people who have seen this LES MIZ revival but did NOT see Ramin, which would indicate that he is out quite a lot. Is he contracted for 8 shows a week, or (like Phantom's Christine) does he have regular shows he does not do?

He's contracted for 7 performances a week. Thursday is his night off for January and February.

I was at the same performance and found Walpole to be quite a good Valjean. While I admit he is a different physical type than Ramin and does not have quite the presence and physicality, he is still a very good Valjean, and the rest of the cast was superb. However, I can understand your frustration if you are a Ramin fan and he was not there. Did you stop at the B.O. on your way out to see if you could exchange your ticket for a performance with Ramin? I thought they tended to be considerate of this when u.s. goes on. Maybe I am wrong.

In my experience, whether or not the box office is willing to exchange a ticket due to a performer being out depends largely on how you acquired the ticket. If the ticket was purchased through TDF or a similar discount service, then no - they will not. I went to see EVITA 3 times - all tix purchased through TDF - before I finally got to see Ricky Martin.

Also, Ramin was out for my first visit to Les Miz. Same story. The b.o. wouldn't exchange a TDF ticket. I liked Walpole's voice and thought he sang the role beautifully.

However, Ramin has "it" and is worth seeing. His Bring Him Home was very moving. He's also very easy on the eyes.
