I'll Agree to Disagree With Every Point

Posted by: Major 11:54 pm EST 01/19/15
In reply to: A list, if you really want to know - Lroay 11:39 pm EST 01/19/15

I loved the score from the opening number through his mother's first song and the faux Elvis number.

And I admit to laughing to Friki Friki and certainly found it no more offensive than many songs in The Producers or the "Jew" song from Spamalot.

As far as the cast, I found Danza charming if not a natural song and dance man. Rob McClure was funny every man to me. And Brynn O'Malley was quite good with what I thought was a role that perhaps was saddled with being more reactive to the men.

For what it's worth, I appreciate your point of view - just don't agree with it.

I did not hate the show as much as Lroay, but I will say that I found Frikki Frikki to be a bit rape-y and not at all funny. If the genders were reversed, no one would have ever let that song on stage in 2015.

Those numbers have a very different message, because the characters singing them are not humiliating themselves at the same time.

Again, I disagree.

One could easily argue that the characters in "Keep it Gay" or "When You've Got it, Flaunt it" are humiliating themselves.

I found all these numbers funny. But the fact that they dare to offend is part of the humor.

I have no opinion on Honeymoon in Vegas... but who would be offended by "When You've Got It, Flaunt It" and in what way is it humiliating to the character?

I fully agree. Have we reached a point -- particularly in a period show -- when we can't portray sexuality in a self-serving way? Sex, and the myriad fantasies it inspires, thank goodness, is seldom PC. People throw themselves at one another for the damnedest reasons, with passion, foolishness, obsession and regret. Unless someone is inappropriately sexualizing children (hello Madison Avenue, and I don't mean MAD MEN era) or promoting/forgiving violence, sexuality is quite literally ... wait for it ... up for grabs. What would we do without some of those grabs?

What period is the show set in? The 90s? That's not really a far enough away era for us to overlook negative representations of sex/sexuality.

I would agree with the larger point you are making.

It's unclear what you're responding to. Have you seen HONEYMOON IN VEGAS?

You must be reading the board in flat mode. In threaded mode it's crystal clear that he's responding to (and agreeing with) Chazwaza's post about "If You've Got It, Flaunt It."
