Reba is the gold standard for the role, but I always thought Carrie Underwood might've had a fightin' chance if she had played Annie rather than Maria Von Trapp. She could've found the rhythms of the character's speech effortlessly, rather than straining to sell both an Austrian and a nun. In hindsight, the decision to shove a C&W/Idol star in to the R&H classic seems even more ludicrous, when ANNIE GET YOUR GUN could've worked.

But too late.

And then of course, Ms. Williams was accomplished but still devoid of needed personality and charisma as Peter.

Why can't they work harder at matching sensibilities and known skill sets to synergy between performer and role?

Anyway, about a decade ago, Reba would've been wonderful in MOLLY BROWN. Now she's too old, and the material is still in turnaround. She found the role of a lifetime in ANNIE, and was vastly superior to Peters, who seemed to wear the role as window dressing without fully inhabiting it. And I still loved hearing her.
