Not only is it a great number for Georg, but it adds so much to the scene. He's there, a churning mix of emotions, leaning more towards the snippy side, since that's his SOP with Amalia. She's there, devastated that Dear Friend hasn't come and angry that her workplace enemy has. The scene itself is terrific, thanks to Masteroff's mastery, but I think it's far stronger with the song. It helps lead to Amalia's vicious lashing-out at Georg--and his swift exit afterwards.
