THE PUBLIC THEATER BEGINS PERFORMANCES FOR WORLD PREMIERE MUSICAL HAMILTON Book, Music, and Lyrics by Lin-Manuel Miranda Inspired By The Book “Alexander Hamilton” by Ron Chernow Choreography by Andy Blankenbuehler Directed by Thomas Kail New York Historical Society To Loan Dueling Statues of Alexander Hamilton and Aaron Burr For Display in The Public’s Ford Foundation Lobby The Public Theater (Artistic Director, Oskar Eustis; Executive Director, Patrick Willingham) begins performances tonight for the world premiere musical HAMILTON, with book, music, and lyrics by Lin-Manuel Miranda. Inspired by the book “Alexander Hamilton” by Ron Chernow and directed by Thomas Kail, HAMILTON has been extended twice due to popular demand to Sunday, April 5, with an official press opening on Tuesday, February 17. In partnership with the New York Historical Society, The Public will feature two life-size bronze statues of the duel between Alexander Hamilton and Aaron Burr in the Ford Foundation Lobby. Created by Kim Crowley, the life-size sculptures capture the critical moment of Alexander Hamilton and Aaron Burr’s infamous duel on July 11, 1804. In the heady, scandal-ridden days of the early Republic, duels were not infrequent: Hamilton allegedly participated in 10, and Burr in three. Hamilton, the Secretary of the Treasury, and Burr, the sitting Vice President, came into frequent personal and political conflict. During Burr’s 1804 campaign for governor of New York, Hamilton actively denounced Burr. Blaming Hamilton for the campaign loss, Burr challenged the honor-bound Hamilton to a duel. Skirting the New York ban on such “affairs of honor,” the two men rowed across the Hudson River to Weehawken, New Jersey, where dueling was prosecuted less aggressively. Hamilton, wielding pistols modified with hair-triggers, fired first, and is purported to have missed Burr intentionally. Burr returned fire, mortally wounding Hamilton, who died the next day. These statues were featured in the exhibition Alexander Hamilton: The Man Who Made Modern America (New York Historical Society, September 10, 2004 – February 28, 2005), which explored the statesman whose life inspired debate and controversy, and whose vision helped shape the United States. Free tickets to the first preview on Tuesday, January 20 will be available via TodayTix mobile lottery, launching today. Winners will be notified by email and push notifications between 12:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m. on the day of the first preview. Winners must confirm their winning tickets in the TodayTix app within one hour of being notified. A limited number of tickets will also be distributed, beginning at 12:00 p.m., via lottery in the lobby of The Public Theater at Astor Place at 425 Lafayette Street. In addition to the free first preview “Free for All” Initiative, The Public and TodayTix will offer “Hamilton for a Hamilton” ($10), furthering the innovative new partnership with TodayTix and The Public’s ongoing commitment to making theater accessible to everyone. During the run of Hamilton, a pair of tickets will be available for each performance for $10 per ticket, beginning on January 21. The lottery will begin each day at midnight for the performance that same day, and winners will be notified three to four hours before show time. Winners will make the payment in the TodayTix app and collect the tickets at the box office. LIN-MANUEL MIRANDA (Book, Music, and Lyrics/Alexander Hamilton) is the Tony and Grammy award-winning composer-lyricist-star of Broadway's In the Heights. In the Heights received four 2008 Tony Awards (including Best Musical, Best Orchestrations, Best Choreography), with Miranda receiving a Tony Award for Best Score, as well as a nomination for Best Leading Actor in a Musical. In the Heights was also recognized as a Finalist for the 2009 Pulitzer Prize in Drama. Miranda is the co-composer (with Tom Kitt), and co-lyricist (with Amanda Green) of Broadway’s Bring it On: The Musical (2013 Tony nom., Best Musical, 2013 Drama Desk nom., Best Lyrics in a Musical). Miranda contributed new songs to the revival of Stephen Schwartz' Working and provided Spanish translations for the 2009 Broadway revival of West Side Story.
