NATIONAL PUPPETRY CONFERENCE ANNOUNCES

25th SEASON AT THE O’NEILL

APPLICATIONS NOW ACCEPTED THROUGH MARCH 6th

Waterford, CT—The Eugene O’Neill Theater Center is proud to announce the 25th Annual National Puppetry Conference, with the application process now underway for participants. The Conference begins June 6, 2015 and culminates with public performances June 12 & 13. Pre-Conference intensive workshops run June 3 – 5.

During both the pre-conference and the main conference, participants collaborate with nationally and internationally renowned puppet artists, and each other, to produce innovative plays and productions that push the boundaries of puppetry’s definitions and dare participants to challenge themselves and their audience. The conference is open to puppeteers, musicians, artists, actors, playwrights, and students as an ideal venue to experiment and develop new work.

This year’s guest artists include Teatro Hugo and Ines, Ronnie Burkett, Jim Kroupa, Alice Therese Gotschalk, Tim Lagasse, and Martin P. Robinson.

Renowned for transforming the ordinary into the extraordinary, Peruvian puppeteers Hugo and Ines are beloved the world over for the collection of wordless whimsical vignettes. They will offer a workshop, sharing elements of mime, puppetry, and how they developed the philosophy of their work, along with showing how to build figures with the hands and other parts of the body.

Participants in Jim Kroupa’s The Howdy-Do Show will create a puppet variety show inspired by 1940’s cowboy music. The focus of the workshop will be on performance and the structure of the piece will allow each participant to take a lead role.

Ronnie Burkett will lead Text Creation and Interpretation. Participants will work with Ronnie on the interpretation and acting of artist-created work, exploring the development of the piece into a well-performed theatrical event.

The Conference will also feature returning marionette masters Phillip Huber and Jim Rose, who will lead the marionette building and performing strands of the conference. Additional opportunities for participants include the Emerging Artist strand for previous participants, Writing for the Puppet Theater, Music for Puppet Theater, and Resident Company.

Pre-Conference intensive workshops will feature Alice Therese Gottschalk: Movement for Puppetry, Jim Kroupa: Everything You Want to Know about Mechs and Then Some!, Ronnie Burkett: Writing for the Puppet Theater, and Tim Lagasse and Martin P. Robinson: Video Anarchy! A special workshop starting on May 31, 2015.

Applications will be accepted until March 6th at 11:59pm PST. There is a $35.00 USD application fee. To apply online and for information on financial assistance and scholarships, please visit www.theoneill.org.

Guest Artist Bios:

HUGO SUAREZ was born in Peru while INÉS PASIC is from Bosnia-Herzegovina, but their unconventional artistry transcends all traditional boundaries. Their work has been described as a combination of mime, dance, and puppetry, and their onstage characters are created from knees, feet, hands, elbows, and a handful of props. The partnership of Hugo and Inés was founded in 1986 and their first production was premiered the following year. From their home base in Lima, Peru, they have since performed at theaters and festivals throughout North and South America, Europe, and Asia.

Recognized as one of the foremost theatre artists on the international stage, RONNIE BURKETT has been credited with creating some of the world’s most elaborate and provocative puppetry. Ronnie Burkett Theatre of Marionettes was formed in 1986 and has stimulated an unprecedented adult audience for puppet theatre, continuously playing to great critical and public acclaim on Canada’s major stages, and as a guest company on numerous international tours abroad.

JIM KROUPA is a puppeteer, director, and master puppet builder. Jim’s puppeteering skills brought him to the attention of Jim Henson, who engaged him to perform on “Sesame Street,” “Little Muppet Monsters,” The Muppet Meeting films, and assorted Muppet specials. Jim has also puppeteered extensively on “Between the Lions,” “Bear and the Big Blue House,” “Book of Pooh,” “Johnny and the Sprites” for the Disney channel, “No Strings International,” and the new PBS series “Time Machine Guitar.” His talents as a performer/puppet coordinator have brought to life an impressive list of commercials, such as the Wise Potato Chip owl, Ken-L-Ration Smorgasburger dog food, Post Crispy Critters cereal, Christmas spots for Bloomindales, Hess Oil, Pepsi, and now once again animates the bear for Snuggle Fabric Softener. As a partner in 3/Design Studio, Jim designs and builds puppets and specializes in creating mechanisms and special effects for such commercials as the invisible man for Mirinda, angel wings for Coronet’s Angel Soft Bath Tissue and effects for features such as Little Monsters, Woody Allen’s Alice, and recently rebuilt many of the mechanisms and characters for Disney’s Muppets. As 3/Design’s principle performer/puppet director, Jim performs many of the characters, and was Batly on “Eureeka’s Castle.”

The National Puppetry Conference is a multi-faceted conference whose primary mission is the development of solid dramaturgical works for the puppet theater. It culminates with two public performances of the newly developed works. It is led by National Puppetry Conference Artistic Director, Pam Arciero and Preston Whiteway, Executive Director of the Eugene O’Neill Theater Center.
