I want this to succeed so bad. I saw it in Williamstown this summer and was riveted. The other two in my group were less impressed. I don't know what these producers are thinking but the 2015 broadway audience is not going to embrace this piece. I wish them luck but dark and provocative does not mix well with broadway 2015.

It would help if both top Times had not reviewed regional productions without expressing great enthusiasm for the piece. And, of course, it is the most recent of those regional productions that is coming to the Lyceum (perhaps with a few cast changes in supporting roles and minor adjustments, but essentially that production).

Having said that, I agree with robert_j that some investors may feel that they're making an important contribution to the arts, akin to making a contribution to a nonprofit company. Investors in the Broadway transfer of Caroline, or Change stated that they were expecting to lose their money, but they felt it was important that the show be seen on Broadway (or something along those lines).

Naive question, but are investors always in it for the money? In the opera world, donors routinely gift productions to opera houses, obviously with no expectation of returning a profit. Might not a similar logic sometimes obtain here? People might just really like Chita and want to donate to the production in order to get her on Broadway. It is a donation to the arts, not a commercial venture (although if it does make money, that is a nice bonus).

no, but the opera isa non profit enterprise whereas commercial broadway is a for profit enterprise. If you read the offering papers for the show, there is nothing in there aboutdonating to the arts,

I think CHITA is great, but if I were producing, and I wanted to make a profit, I'd cast Jennifer Lopez and Hugh Jackman.
