There's a bunch of ways to go, nothing exactly direct.

I'd exit Penn and walk to Herald Square (one avenue) and take the N or R train downtown to 8th Street and then your a block or two away.

You could also take the BDFM from Herald Square to Broadway Lafayette, but you'll be further away when you exit downtown.
