Ticket prices at The Public and other not-for-profits.

Posted by: portenopete 04:31 pm EST 01/21/15

I was just looking at the Public's website when I heard that there were tickets available for HAMILTON tomorrow night (its' second preview) and was gobsmacked to see that they are asking $120 ($80-85 for members).

I see nothing on the website about any ways to pay less: are there ways to pay less?

And is this a typical price at The Public? Typical for a musical? Typical for Lyn-Manuel Miranda's follow-up to IN THE HEIGHTS?

I find the way a lot of the small, not-for-profits are doing business these days makes me queasy.

The Donmar Warehouse in London, for instance, now basically requires you to be a member in order to get a seat. By the time the various levels of membership have ordered during their early ordering period, there is virtually nothing left.

However they at least offer £10 seats a week before in a scheme supported by Barclays. (The traffic on their box office website- which is a third party system- has proven massive when I've tried and I've never gotten anything.)

Failing that there are always day standing room places and the usual smattering of returns.

Does The Public have any of this?

Like Shakespeare in the park and theater outreach for students. I was surprised also at the price, but more surprised at how few tickets ,were left in the extension for a,show that didn't have a first preview yet when I looked last week. I'm very weak person and bought s ticket because it was a Sunday night which is hard to fill anyway. I hope it's not a disaster.

With Fun Home at the Public, I believe that the tickets for at least the final extension were over $100, but I don't think they were $120. And I think that the early part of the run was cheaper (I want to say $75).

$120 for an Off-Broadway show that has a large cast but may not be that technically complex seems like a lot, if that is the cheapest ticket that was ever available outside of a lottery. And I'm a bit surprised that there is no apparent way for members to get tickets for less than $80.

Fun Home single tickets started at $81.50, and went up to $96.50 with the last six weeks' extension.

Hamilton was originally $80 or $85 for the general public, and $40 for members.

Thanks for the additional information. That's quite different. I don't have a problem with their raising prices later on in the sales period.

Yes, the Public Theatre offers free performances for the first preview, and there are two kind of lottery systems for Hamilton.

Free tickets will be available via TodayTix mobile lottery, beginning one week before the first preview of each show in the 2014-2015 season.

Winners will be notified by email and push notification between 12:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m. on the day of the first preview. You must confirm your winning tickets in the TodayTix app within one hour of being notified.

A limited number of tickets will also be distributed through an in-person lottery in the lobby of The Public Theater.

Hamilton for a Hamilton

In addition to the free first preview “Free for All” Initiative, The Public and TodayTix will offer “Hamilton for a Hamilton” ($10), furthering the innovative new partnership with TodayTix and The Public’s ongoing commitment to making theater accessible to everyone. During the run of HAMILTON,a pair of tickets will be available for each performance for $10 per ticket, beginning on January 21. The lottery will begin each day at midnight for the performance that same day, and winners will be notified three to four hours before show time. Winners will make the payment in the TodayTix app and collect the tickets at the box office.

$20 Ticket Lottery

A limited number of $20 tickets, subject to availability, will be distributed via a lottery in the lobby of The Public Theater.

EVENING PERFORMANCES: Sign up for the lottery will begin two and a half hours prior to the performance time. The lottery will be drawn two hours prior to performances.

MATINEES: Sign up for the lottery will begin one and a half hours prior to the performance time. The lottery will be drawn one hour prior to performances.

These tickets are $20, cash only, with a limit of two tickets per person.

Here Lies Love offered rush tickets for $40 (the regular tickets were $99?). The Public also has a cancelation (waiting list) line, but you have to pay the face value of the tickets.

To use TodayTix, don't you need an iPhone or Smartphone in order to acquire their app?

True, so I don't think they can say "everybody can afford." (plus only a pair of tickets for each day, so the chance of winning is very slim even if you have a smartphone)

But anyone can go to The Public lobby to enter into $20 lottery which is still cheaper than other Broadway shows' lottery.

I haven't seen Hamilton yet...

so I can't comment about the production values, but the orchestra I saw in a video clip looked pretty large, much bigger than the six (?) musicians for Fun Home, for instance. And maybe the sets are elaborate, etc. Off-Broadway has really ramped it up lately. I bought my member ticket for $50 earlier, so the price really has gone up.

Looks like 11 vs Fun Home's 6 or 7. And 24 in the cast vs 14.
