re: Robert Preston...

There was talk of "Victor/Victoria" being adapted for the stage years before it actually happened, while Preston was still alive, and Preston was outspokenly critical of the idea. His comments, if I recall correctly, suggested that Edwards did not know what he was doing and that Julie was following him blindly. I think he felt it would be compared to and pale next to "La Cage", which was then a huge hit.

It may have been in the Sunday Times Magazine. Perhaps you can google it.

Anyway, she probably liked working with him and attributed his criticisms to those "demons."

I recall him also rejecting the idea of repeating his iconic role of Harold Hill in a Broadway revival. He said very matter of factly that he had committed his performance to film and saw no reason to do it again.

He certainly could have pulled it off age-wise and woulda been a big moneymaker. When Craig Bierko did it in last revival, some critics said he was imitating Preston.

I seem to recall an interview with Julie being rather upset and disappointed that Preston didn't want to do the show on Broadway. She seemed to give the impression that Preston was missing out on a good thing, and he just couldn't be convinced to hop on board.

It would have been very difficult for him to be in a show that opened in 1995. ;)

He worked with Blake and Julie several times in films, including SOB. Yes, he had a notorious love life outside of his marriage, including most of his female co stars on stage and screen. But I saw him in Music Man, Sly Fox, and several other of his Broadway shows and he never gave less than 100% which is why it is hard to see the revivals with other actors. I wish I had seen him in We Take the Town and the Jewish musical by Bob Merrill both of which closed out of town. Did he sing "How Does the Wine Taste" in We Take the Town?"

Does it sound like a song that Pancho Villa would sing?
