New conservatory announces its season

Posted by: dramedy 02:17 pm EDT 03/24/15

Ave q again.

I think the first play is the subject of the terrific movie Pride, which had a golden globe nomination.

The only other musical is on a clear day--reimagined. its not a very gay musical now, I wonder how they make it gay.

Mothers and sons is a good addition. But buyer and cellar was at the curran last year with the terrific Michael Urie, so why are they doing it here.

Overall, a rather disappointing season in my book. I Might not see anything this coming season.

No mention of the fact that they're also doing The Nance?

And yes, they're doing the revised version of On A Clear Day, in which Daisy Gamble became David Gamble, a man. Falling in love with a man. That's pretty gay.

I think, other than the third production of Avenue Q, it's a very ambitious season.

AQ again? Really? What, are they going to do this every season? Ok, I'm biased, since I saw it two seasons ago there and never understood all the hubbub about it. I was clearly in the minority given the raves here on ATC and elsewhere, and I suppose there is demand for them to do it again.

I've never seen B&C so I'll be interested, especially since judging from the picture Kayta Smirnoff Skye (out of drag) is playing Alex. He has a strong resemblance to Urie and J. Conrad is a fun and engaging performer. Had a nice chat with him following the Help is on the Way comedy benefit last year.

B&C will start J. Conrad Frank who of course is Kayta Smimoff Skye out of drag. He would be great in the role.

"Avenue Q" is a big money maker for the NCTC. They had full houses for all of their performances in 2014.

To produce ave q again and put on a one person show. I guess it will be close to two years between Urie and this production.

Agreed.
I wonder if McNally would need to do rewrites on Andre's Mother to match any details in his later Mothers and Sons.

Of on a clear day in2012. It was a flop even with Harry connick jr. Isn't there a gay musical they could produce?

The re-imagined book has quite a strong gay element to it and totally fits in the mission of NCTC (not that it was a great revival in the first place, but it's not completely unworthy of doing). I think it's a fairly bold season for them. And in the big picture, NO ONE saw Buyer & Cellar at the Curran - sadly, the night I saw it there were maybe 150 people there. It's one I'd sit through again--especially with a local performer whose work I enjoy... it'll be nice to see him play a 'straight' role.

But as I pointed out above, it will be almost two years between productions by next summer, which is probably long enough.

And of course NCTC is cheaper than SHN so there could be lots of folks who didn't see the tour due to price.
