Aurora Theatre Company continues its 23rd season with TALLEY’S FOLLY. In a season dedicated to his memory, the company pays homage to one of the most prolific and revered American playwrights of the 20th century, Lanford Wilson, with “The Talley Trilogy.” The first entry in this series of three interrelated plays is TALLEY’S FOLLY. It’s the Fourth of July, 1944 in Lebanon, Missouri. Matt Friedman, a Jewish accountant from St. Louis, has arrived to plead his love to well-to-do gentile Sally Talley. A rocky courtship the previous summer might have ended when Sally stopped replying to Matt’s letters, but Matt never gave up hope and has showed up unexpectedly at Sally’s home, refusing to accept her rebuffs and fears that her family would never approve of their marriage. Charming and indomitable, Matt steadily presses his case and overcomes Sally’s defenses, telling her his innermost secrets and, in return, learning hers as well. Gradually he awakens Sally to the possibilities of a life together where two wounded hearts can become whole. Acclaimed Bay Area actress and director Joy Carlin (After the Revolution, Body Awareness, Jack Goes Boating, Awake and Sing!), who played Sally Talley in American Conservatory Theater’s 1979 production of Wilson’s Fifth of July, directs this romantic theatrical waltz featuring Lauren English (Seminar at San Francisco Playhouse) and Rolf Saxon (After the Revolution). TALLEY’S FOLLY, about which the New York Post said, “It is perhaps the simplest, the most lyrical play Wilson has written…funny, sweet, touching and marvelously written,” and which The New York Times called “a play to savor and cheer,” premiered on Broadway in 1980 and received a critically acclaimed off Broadway revival in 2013. The Independent Eye presents an inspired two-person take on William Shakespeare’s KING LEAR. King Lear is the puppeteer of his own puppet show. In his mind, he is the only real human in his motherless kingdom of power and commodity, where love is merchandise for barter, quantifiable by the number of knights under his command. As Lear obsessively plays out his loss of family, power, friendship, shelter, sanity, and hope, The Fool, an acid clown who goads Lear in his desperation, stage-manages his story until they both succumb to Lear’s madness. Played out within the confines of an aluminum cage, King Lear and The Fool are accompanied by nearly 30 life-sized, hand, and finger puppets operated by actors and master puppeteers Conrad Bishop and Elizabeth Fuller. This stunning take on Shakespeare’s KING LEAR puts an ingenious spin on The Bard’s tragic tale of family, king, and country. DATES: Opens: Friday, April 10 (also press opening) All performances April 10-11, 17-18, 24-25 at 8pm; April 26 at 2pm WHERE: The Emerald Tablet, 80 Fresno Street, San Francisco TICKETS: For tickets ($20 students and seniors; $25 general admission) visit brownpapertickets.com/event/1238008; for more information visit independenteye.org/stage

Mr. Lloyd is appearing in San Jose one night only and will treat the audience to a collection ofsongs spanning his career - including favorite songs from past shows as well as a handful of songs he has never performed before. He'll be singing songs from his MAC Award nominated CD, BARRY LLOYD LIVE!

"Barry Lloyd, with fingers flying at the piano and singing with his distinctive modulated baritone voice, brought back those wonderful golden days at the Blue Angel in New York during the middle '50s. . . . His phrasing of each song is impeccable. There is the sophistication of a Bobby Short about him. Sometimes in some of the comedy songs, I could hear Noel Coward sitting at a piano singing those witty stylish words." -- Richard Connema, Talkin' Broadway

"Performer Lloyd has comic timing that works every time. When called for, he sells a song with outrageous abandon. And yet he can also romance the room with that well-trained voice. That masculinepurr will send sensual shivers up and down many a spine. His phrasing works beautifully with the music, and his sense of dynamics is flawless." -- Tom W. Kelly, San Francisco Bay Times

Opening weekend continues on Saturday, May 23 with Thuy Linh in THEN & NOW Ms. Linh is the first Vietnamese American Jazz vocalist of the bay area. As a petite chanteuse with a surprisingly low and rich pitch Ms. Linh glides warmly between lyrical sensuality and pensive nostalgia. With a unique style and an exotic sound, Ms. Linh mesmerizes audiences with her soothing vocals. Ms. Linh has been singing since age twenty. Self-taught and drawn to jazz in college by the classic voices of Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughan, Billie Holiday and Nat King Cole though she credits her love of singing to the melodious songs she heard growing up in her Vietnamese community, and her unique style to a most unusual personal history for a singer of American jazz. Ms. Linh was born in Nha Trang, Vietnam. After the fall of Saigon, hundreds of thousands fled to neighboring countries and the United States. Nine year old Thùy and her family were on one of the boats heading for the US.About the same time in her life, Thùy was also on a personal journey. As a child, she had contracted polio. Soon after, the young girl had to deal with the effects of post-polio syndrome. The effects however did not prevent her from going forward and pursuing her dream of singing.
