MICHAEL FEINSTEIN APRIL 29 –MAY 3 The Ambassador of the Great American Songbook returns to Feinstein’s at the Nikko for a celebration of Frank Sinatra’s 100th Birthday. Feinstein earned his fifth GRAMMY nomination in 2009 for The Sinatra Project, his Concord Records CD saluting the music of Ol’ Blue Eyes. The Sinatra Project, Volume II, The Good Life was released in 2011 and his Emmy-nominated TV special Michael Feinstein – The Sinatra KEIKO MATSUI MA7 7 -8 Born in Tokyo, Keiko Matsui is a Japanese composer and keyboardist with a focus on smooth jazz, jazz fusion and new age music. She has released twenty CDs over her four-decade career that began when she was in junior high school. Her early musical influences ranged from Chick Corea and Stevie Wonder to Sergei Rachmaninoff. Matsui sees music as “The great gifts from the human souls from the past, for the children of the future. We are connected by music, as the ocean connects the continents.” As a lover of nature, she often refers to plants, animals and the elements in her lyrics and song titles. Today, Matsui resides in Los Angeles and tours extensively around the world. She is also known for using her music to support a variety of charitable causes including the Susan G. Komen for the Cure, Asians for Miracle Marrow Matches and the United Nations World Food Programme. MARILYN MAYE May 15 - 16 In a word – “Legendary.” Marilyn Maye is an award-winning singer, actress, director, educator and musical treasure. She was a guest on The Tonight Show starring Johnny Carson 76 times, which is the record for a singer. After one such show-stopping appearance Mr. Carson looked into the camera at his audience of millions and said, “And that, young singers, is the way it’s done.” The Smithsonian Institution included her RCA recording of “Too Late Now” on their list of the 110 Best American Compositions of the Twentieth Century, assuring her place in popular music history. She has recorded seven albums and her singles “Guess Who I Saw Today” and “Take Five” have been hailed as “timeless” by jazz critics. As a petite chanteuse with a surprisingly low and rich pitch Ms. Linh glides warmly between lyrical sensuality and pensive nostalgia. With a unique style and an exotic sound, Ms. Linh mesmerizes audiences with her soothing vocals. Ms. Linh has been singing since age twenty. Self-taught and drawn to jazz in college by the classic voices of Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughan, Billie Holiday and Nat King Cole though she credits her love of singing to the melodious songs she heard growing up in her Vietnamese community, and her unique style to a most unusual personal history for a singer of American jazz. Ms. Linh was born in Nha Trang, Vietnam. After the fall of Saigon, hundreds of thousands fled to neighboring countries and the United States. Nine year old Thùy and her family were on one of the boats heading for the US.About the same time in her life, Thùy was also on a personal journey. As a child, she had contracted polio. Soon after, the young girl had to deal with the effects of post-polio syndrome. The effects however did not prevent her from going forward and pursuing her dream of singing. Currently Ms. Linh is creating original compositions in collaboration with the poet Bashou. The first in the series is Lotus Child and the second is Lady Moon. Along with composer Nguyen Du Ms. Linh has created Jazz is You! Jazz La Em! With the mission to bring jazz into the heart of the ethnic communities and make it accessible. Jazz is You!
