My Tony Vote for Best Musical: THE VISIT (by a long mile)

Went to this thing thinking it would be pretentious, heavyhanded and boring. Was totally blown away. Went with three other friend who are also Tony voters. None of us think that any of of the nominated shows are brilliant successes through and through BUT finally a smart, ambitious, clever and insightful piece like THE VISIT is without a question the only nominee with any real chance of being remembered 25 years from now. It takes a cold icy play built within an Epic Theater framework and applies a compelling and compassionate voice to the world of these characters . Using the vernacular of the American Musical these writers and the brilliant Chita Rivera locate an emotional pulse in a play that has always lived in the head and not the heart. Don't get me wrong...love the play, in the right hands it can be very powerful. But what Kander, Ebb, Mcnally and Rivera have done is stake a claim on Broadway for the intelligent, provocative musical and succeed handily in proving that the American Musical can handle just about anything. Truly something memorable.

Oh and by the way, not all road presenters vote for what will have the most success in our market. Some of us just vote for the best show. So, 4 votes from the road for THE VISIT.

Actually, this is the only thing I want to see again before I leave town. Congrats to all involved. And, THANK YOU!!!
