The fact that so much is accomplished with such relative economy makes the achievement all the more notable and commendable. Yet the show manages to drive headlong toward its crisis (minimizing predictability, a built-in drawback to the tale) without rushing. As you articulate, the musical manages to borrow the premise and story of the play for other, very different purposes. In the weeks since I've seen it, I've realized -- and finally fully appreciated -- how these collaborators have employed the play's elements, not as a strict musicalization, but a new meditation on its themes and ideas. Digging beneath the revenge metaphor and resulting satire to excavate a genuinely sad and unfinished love story gives the evening a very different, very immediate heartbeat. If that results in a more traditional, ultimately emotion-driven piece of musical theater, in the hands of these masters it produces dazzling dividends. Comparing it to the play doesn't serve. This VISIT stands alone, elegant and ravishing.
