WHAT I DID LAST SUMMER (spoilers as to staging)

Posted by: AC126748 08:19 am EDT 05/03/15

The conceit of projecting the typewriter written stage directions through the play didn't bother me as much as some other commentators on here. What did bother me was the on-stage drummer, underscoring literally every single moment in the play with unnecessary percussion. It wasn't needed to create drama, or tension, or feeling. The actors could handle that just fine on their own.

And fine they are, to a person, especially the talented group of young performers who make up the majority of the cast. As the Gurney stand-in, Noah Galvin confidently carries the play on his back, by turns funny, moving, and utterly convincing as a young man coming of age and coming into his mind. He more than holds his own playing opposite Kristine Nielsen, whose found in Anna Trumball a role that really highlights what she does best as an actor: she seduces the audience with humor and world-weariness, then hits us with just the right amount of pathos. As Charlie's mother, Carolyn McCormick is surprising, delightful and moving, as well.

Even with the unnecessary music, I'd highly recommend this production for the acting, especially at the $25 price tag. I'm already planning to go again.
