The Direction of FINDING NEVERLAND

Posted by: DOTD 11:24 am EDT 05/03/15

FINDING NEVERLAND has many faults but I think the root of many of them is director Diane Paulus. For a musical about the man who created "Peter Pan," the direction is very earth-bound. It never soars. There is a big difference between directing a new play or musical and directing a revival. Ms. Paulus's Broadway acclaim rests on three revivals, "Hair" "The Gershwin's Porgy and Bess," and "Pippin." A director of a new work must help shape the material. It's here where I think she let down FINDING NEVERLAND.
