World Premiere IDEATION Goes to NEW YORK By Aaron Loeb Directed by Josh Costello March 6 to April 17, 2016
– San Francisco Playhouse (Bill English, Artistic Director; Susi Damilano, Producing Director) is thrilled to announce that its production of Ideation, which had its world premiere at the Playhouse and won the 2014 prestigious William Glickman playwriting award, will move to New York City, playing Off-Broadway at 59E59 Theaters as part of their 2015-16 5A series. Josh Costello will direct. This is the second consecutive year that a San Francisco Playhouse production has been invited to participate in the 5A series in New York. Last season the Playhouse’s commissioned play Bauer by Lauren Gunderson, another world premiere, was a hit at 59E59.

Ideation received its world premiere as part of the San Francisco Playhouse’s Sandbox Series of World Premieres and quickly became a runaway hit earning the William Glickman Award for Best New Play. In September 2014 it became the first Sandbox Series transfer to the Mainstage, where it opened the 2014-2015 season and was both a box office and critical success. Ideation was originally developed in the Just Theater New Play Lab and the Bay Area Playwrights Festival.

The full San Francisco cast has signed on to the New York production: Ben Euphrat, Jason Kapoor, Mark Anderson Phillips, Carrie Paff, and Michael Ray Wisely.

“I have always felt a strong mission to bring Ideation to a wider audience,” said Artistic Director Bill English. “And so, I am deeply grateful and thrilled that the team at 59E59 has included us for the second time in as many years in their 5A Season of world premieres, where Aaron Loeb’s rabidly entertaining and provocative play will find the larger audience it so richly deserves.”

Aaron Loeb brings a dark comic edge to this psychological suspense thriller, in which group of corporate consultants work together on a mysterious and ethically ambiguous project. As the lines between right and wrong are blurred, these characters must navigate the cognitive dissonances and moral dilemmas to decide for themselves if everything is as it really seems.

"I'm absolutely thrilled to be partnered with San Francisco Playhouse once more as we take Ideation to New York City and an off-Broadway production,” said playwright Aaron Loeb. “This is our third production together, and there could be no surer friends to a playwright."

CUTTING BALL THEATER PRESENTS “RISK IS THIS…THE CUTTING BALL NEW EXPERIMENTAL PLAYS FESTIVAL” May 17 – June 15, 2015

– Cutting Ball Theater continues its 16th season with the adventurous RISK IS THIS…THE CUTTING BALL NEW EXPERIMENTAL PLAYS FESTIVAL, one of the only play festivals in America solely dedicated to experimental works for the stage. Pushing the boundaries of what theater can be, this year’s festival features five new works in staged readings, including two new plays from Cutting Ball resident playwright Andrew Saito. RISK IS THIS… offers a unique opportunity for audiences to see plays in development, alongside the artists creating them, as the works find their theatrical voice. RISK IS THIS…THE CUTTING BALL NEW EXPERIMENTAL PLAYS FESTIVAL plays May 17 through June 15 at the Cutting Ball Theater in residence at EXIT on Taylor (277 Taylor Street) in San Francisco. Free and open to the public (general seating; $20 donation for reserved seating; $45 donation for a 12-month membership and festival pass). For more information, the public may visit cuttingball.com or call 415-525-1205.

“For the first time we are pairing the RISK IS THIS… Festival with the World Premiere of a play that Cutting Ball commissioned, Andrew Saito’s Mount Misery,” said Cutting Ball Artistic Director Rob Melrose. “This will allow our audience the experience of seeing five plays at the beginning of their process in workshop readings and then also have the opportunity to see a fully-staged production of a play that got its start in RISK IS THIS…. In addition to Mount Misery, we will be presenting two plays by resident playwright Andrew Saito, Whisper Fish and Beauty Secrets, as part of this year’s RISK IS THIS…. We will also be presenting new plays by Bay Area favorites Christopher Chen and Mark Jackson. Chen’s play Caught explores many levels of reality and the line between art and life. Mark Jackson similarly explores identity and memory in Who is Heiner Müller? Or the End of History. Playwright Heiner Müller is a longtime Cutting Ball favorite. One of our first full productions was of Müller’s Hamletmachine, and we have since done a production of Ajax, for Example and readings of Quartet and The Task. For the Sunday reading of Jackson’s Who is Heiner Müller?, we will be starting with a reading of Hamletmachine so that new audiences can familiarize themselves with Müller’s work before seeing Jackson’s play. We are also presenting a new commission: Katharine Sherman’s nightcap. This play about dreams and REM sleep is our way of kicking off our season of Dream Plays next year. We look forward to sharing all of this, and more, with our audiences as we begin work on these remarkable new projects.”

The schedule for the 2015 RISK IS THIS…THE CUTTING BALL NEW EXPERIMENTAL PLAYS FESTIVAL is as follows:

WHO IS HEINER MÜLLER? OR THE END OF HISTORY
Written and directed by Mark Jackson
May 17 – May 18, 2015

An Author is interrogated by a childhood friend, whose work and name the Author ran off with in the post-World War II chaos of Germany. After 50 years of living in the margins, the old friend kidnaps the now famous Author to exact his revenge by particularly theatrical means. What begins as a puzzling interrogation with questions of death and childhood quickly evolves into a debate between conflicting values of political awareness and personal desire before taking a sharp turn when the interrogator unleashes a play dramatizing the Author’s “true” origins. Neither a biography of Heiner Müller nor an
attempt to represent his work, WHO IS HEINER MÜLLER? OR THE END OF HISTORY is a psycho-mystery-thriller-comedy about death, identity, amnesia, cynicism, world politics, and revenge.

A special Hidden Classics reading of Hamletmachine by Heiner Müller (45 minutes) will be held at 1pm just prior to the May 17 reading of WHO IS HEINER MÜLLER?.

CAUGHT
By Christopher Chen
Directed by Rem Myers

What follows his talk are a series of surreal scenes that question the very assumption of truth in art, performance, and journalism. This new play from Christopher Chen (The Hundred Flowers Project) takes a profound look at reality and what role it plays in art.

nightcap
By Katharine Sherman
Directed by Rob Melrose
May 31 – June 1, 2015

nightcap is a dream play built around two juxtaposing structures: the medieval dream vision - a sleeping seeker, an ethereal guide, a dreamscape backdrop - and the form of one night’s sleep - hypnagogic imagery giving way to the stages of light sleep, to deeper sleep, to dreams. This ode to August Strindberg’s surreal masterpiece A Dream Play was commissioned by Cutting Ball Theater. Sherman’s play Ondine was featured in the 2014 RISK IS THIS festival.

WHISPER FISH

Love and Madness. Folly and Fantasy Los Altos Stage Company Announces 20th Anniversary Season

Los Altos Stage Company is thrilled to announce the line-up for our upcoming season at the Bus Barn Theater in Los Altos. Comprised of two musicals and three plays, our 20th Anniversary Season is overflowing with love, madness, folly and fantasy - the stuff that makes life meaningful, or meaningless, depending on your existential point of view.

The new season opens with a surrealistic comedy that confronts our assumptions about morality, redemption, and the need to connect in a technologically obsessed world; Dead Man's Cell Phone by Sarah Ruhl. Winner of the Helen Hayes Award for Outstanding New Play, this work explores the paradox of modern technology's ability to both unite and isolate people in the digital age. An incessantly ringing cell phone in a quiet café. A stranger at the next table who has had enough. A dead man with a lot of loose ends. Dead Man's Cell Phone opens September 3 and runs through September 27, 2015.

In November, Los Altos Stage Company invites audiences to take a journey with a knight-errant as he rises in triumphant transformation in the classic musical, Man of La Mancha, with book by Dale Wasserman, lyrics by Joe Darion and music by Mitch Leigh.Winner of five Tony Awards, including Best Musical, it tells the story of the "mad" caballero Don Quixote as a play within a play, performed by Cervantes and his fellow prisoners as he awaits a hearing with the Spanish Inquisition. Backed by his faithful sidekick, Sancho Panza, Quixote duels windmills and defends his "perfect lady" Dulcinea. Dare to dream the impossible dream with this timeless, tough, and tuneful celebration of the human spirit. Man of La Mancha opens November 19 and runs through December 19, 2015.

In the New Year, Los Altos Stage Company presents the Bay Area Premiere Production of the winner of the 2010 Horton Foote Prize for excellence in American Theater, Middletownby Will Eno. Inspired by Thornton Wilder's Our Town, Middletown begins with Mary Swanson, who has just moved to a small town, eager to start a family and enjoy neighborly bonds. But when Mary befriends resident John Dodge, she is quick to discover that below Middletown's unflinchingly honest exterior lies something much more complex. This play is a powerful and poignant meditation on birth, death and points between. Middletown opens January 28 and runs through February 21, 2016.

Over fifty years after its original publication, Catch-22 remains a cornerstone of American literature and one of the funniest-and most celebrated-books of all time. In April, Los Altos Stage Company presents Catch-22 the play, adapted for the stage by Joseph Heller. The play is the both intellectually challenging and absurdly funny, interspersed with moments of grisly realism. At the heart of this absurd tale resides the incomparable, malingering bombardier, Yossarian, a hero endlessly inventive in his schemes to save his skin from the horrible chances of war. He'd like to get out but there's always a catch. Catch-22 opens April 7 and runs through May 1, 2016.

Los Altos Stage Company's 20th season comes to a close with the off-Broadway hit musical that the New Yorker called "a giggly cult hit"; Bat Boy: The Musical, with book by Keythe Farley and Brian Flemming, and music and lyrics by Laurence O'Keefe. Winner of the 2001 Lucille Lortel Award for Best Off-Broadway Musical, Bat Boy is a musical comedy/horror show about a half boy/half bat creature who is discovered in a cave near Hope Falls, West Virginia. With a beat-driven rock score that pays homage to the rock musicals of the late '60s and early '70s, it provides a compelling theatrical metaphor for the dangers of prejudice, intolerance, and provincialism. Bat Boy: The Musical opens May 26 and runs through June 25, 2016.

Season subscriptions (5 plays) are on sale now at www.losaltosstage.org or by calling the Los Altos Stage Company Box Office at (650) 941-0551. Prices range from $90 (student) to $162/subscription. OREGON SHAKESPEARE NEWS

#OSF Announces Three New American Revolutions Commissions Idris Goodwin, Dominique Morisseau and Dan O'Brien to explore topics proposed by OSF

.—The Oregon Shakespeare Festival continues to expand its ongoing commitment to the development and production of new work with three new commissions as part of American Revolutions: the United States History Cycle.

American Revolutions is the Oregon Shakespeare Festival’s 10-year commissioning program (2008-2018) of up to 37 new plays that look at moments of change in America's past, with the goal of helping to establish a shared understanding of our national identity and illuminate the best paths for our nation's future.

Idris Goodwin, award-winning playwright, essayist and spoken word artist, will explore a moment of change in the history of the U.S. environment. His jumping-off point will be a 12-volume set of writings and illustrations by teams of scientists and artists sent by the Department of War to identify potential routes for the transcontinental railroad between 1853 and 1855.

“This project with the good people of Oregon Shakespeare marks an exciting new chapter in my writing career,” Goodwin said. “As an artist who regularly engages with our sordid past, inclusion in American Revolutions: the United States History Cycle is a thrilling opportunity to explore big questions and have big conversations.”

Goodwin’s plays include How We Got On, And in this Corner: Cassius Clay and This is Modern Art.

Dominique Morisseau, in a co-commission with Penumbra Theatre, will be writing about the Civil War from an African-American perspective.

“Inspired by Ta-Nehisi Coates’s essay in the Atlantic, 'Why Do So Few Black People Study the Civil War?,' Morisseau said, “I’m eager to write a piece that specifically explores Black women’s experience in this epic fight and their contribution to the toils of freedom on and off the battlefield.”

Morisseau is a writer and actress and an alumna of the Public Theater Emerging Writer’s Group, the Women’s Project Playwrights Lab and Lark Playwrights’ Workshop. Her play Detroit ’67 was the 2014 winner of the Edward M. Kennedy Prize for Drama. Her other plays include Sunset Baby and Follow Me to Nellie’s.

In a co-commission with the Public Theater, playwright, poet and librettist Dan O’Brien will write about the history of guns in America and American culture. “I'm looking forward to the challenge of writing a play that explores the role of The Gun in American history." O'Brien said. "It's a terrifying, and terrifyingly complex, subject that I hope I will do justice to. I feel fortunate to have been given this opportunity by Oregon Shakespeare Festival and the Public Theater, as this is such a current and, sadly, ancient American story.”

O’Brien’s play The Body of an American won the Horton Foote Prize for Outstanding American Play and the inaugural Edward M. Kennedy Prize for Drama (2013), shared with Robert Schenkkan’s All the Way. This year, O’Brien and Paula Vogel will lead the playwriting workshop at the Sewaneee Writers’ Conference.

Alison Carey, director of American Revolutions, said, "We are proud and excited to work with this extraordinary group of writers as they unfold these significant aspects of our country’s history. These are stories that need to be told, and we are so lucky to have great artists willing to tell them."

This year’s American Revolutions commissions and development are supported by grants from The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, The Paul G. Allen Family Foundation, Edgerton Foundation New Play Awards, The Harold and Mimi Steinberg Charitable Trust, and the General William Mayer Foundation.
