...NY may indeed be the fashion capital of the country, but the Oscars are clearly still the biggest fashion event for the general public. Fashion is a huge part of the Oscars experience and some years - not all, I grant you - there are genuinely gorgeous, interesting, iconic looks. You rarely see such interesting fashion at the Tonys becuase, well, let's face it, many of the nominees won't even have their own stylists, let alone entries into the big fashion houses.

Also: re the movie star rebellion against red carpet questions? I honestly think it's ridiculous. I consider myself a feminist and, yes, there are undoubtedly major issues and inequities for women to deal with in all lines of work including - and sometimes especially - in the entertainment industry. But these are movie stars. For many of them, part of their success is their look. And the big stars are not just wearing dresses, but couture creations by genuine masters of their craft. Now, one hopes, they get asked genuine questions about their craft and not JUST about what they're wearing, of course. But, if they really don't want to get asked what they're wearing, perhaps they should do what Sharon Stone did one year and pick up an outfit at The Gap.
