There probably aren't though the problem with LIVING ON LOVE wasn't Renee Fleming's lack of appeal.

There's the intrinsic problem of why would someone pay to see an opera star NOT sing. To be fair, she did sing a little bit, but it's her singing that sells tickets in opera houses and in concerts.

Regular theatre patrons who may or may not have cared about seeing her just didn't want to see the play. It was a poor adaptation of a mediocre/bad play. But for inspired casting the whole thing just wasn't very good.

We can only hope that this doesn't spoil her on B'way forever. Not sure what an appropriate vehicle for her would be but she's a genuine star and crossed over the light comedy extremely well. Problem was that the comedy on LIVING ON LOVE just wasn't there on the page.

After having Paulo Szot once on Broadway, it'd be interesting to see if he had star appeal outside of an event like SOUTH PACIFIC. I'm guessing he would. He might not have advance sales but if it were a role he shined in I think his inherent star quality would eventually catch on. in a lesser known or new work.
