I'm not sure if you're familiar with "The Most Happy Fella" but Tony, the lead is an older gent who speaks with a heavy Italian accent. Domingo's a bit old for it, and the accent is Spanish rather than Italian, but he still plays younger characters than himself at the opera. Plus, he'd most likely have people buying tickets to see his "Happy Fella" if he decided to do it.
