No, ever since the end of the musical variety TV shows, there have been few opportunities for opera singers to connect with the general public.

As for Italians not knowing who Price is, her successes there were very early in her career (50's and 60's). As her career progressed she decreased her international presence steadily. I don't think she did anything in Italy after the 1960s.

Also, I think the Italian opera-going public is aging like it is in the US. Anyone young won't know much about opera there either.
