"Shooting stars, wands and wonder make DCT's 'Flat Stanley' flat out fun."
-- The Dallas Morning News
Brooklyn Center for the Performing Arts at Brooklyn College concludes its Target Storybook Series with Dallas Children's Theater's production of The Musical Adventures of Flat Stanley on Sunday, May 17, 2015 at 2pm. Based on the book Flat Stanley by Jeff Brown, this whirlwind musical adventure tells the story of Stanley Lambchop - the ultimate exchange student - as he travels the globe and learns that heroes come in all shapes and sizes. Tickets are $9 and can be purchased at BrooklynCenter.org or by calling the box office at 718-951-4500 (Tue-Sat, 1pm-6pm).
Now celebrating its 50th anniversary, Jeff Brown's beloved children's book, Flat Stanley, was written in 1964 and has become a literary and pop cultural phenomenon. Following in its footsteps, the musical adaptation, first published in 2008, has received national critical acclaim. "What I love about the show are all the teachable moments that don't feel like lessons," says guest director Michael Serrecchia, who returns to Dallas Children's Theater following his success with the main-stage production of Flat Stanley. "It's a fun, Broadway-style musical comedy about the value of being different and the importance of family." Thwarting a robbery at the Louvre Museum in Paris and surfing off the coast of Hawaii along the way, Stanley's adventures from Hollywood to France to Honolulu and beyond comes to life with the scenic designer Bob Lavallee's colorful designs.
Director Michael Serrecchia became a part of American musical theater history in 1975 as an original cast member of the Pulitzer Prize winning musical, A Chorus Line. During his 18 years performing on Broadway, he worked and learned from some of the best - including Michael Bennett, Bob Fosse, Tommy Tune, Chita Rivera, Liza Minnelli, Joel Grey, Carol Channing, Kander and Ebb, and Cy Coleman.
Brooklyn Center for the Performing Arts' presentation of Dallas Children's Theater's The Musical Adventures of Flat Stanley is supported, in part, by Target.
