Is this really necessary, giving a standing O to a celebrity who is not in the show? I wonder what it’s like to simply walk into a room and receive such adulation, whether the celebrity wants it (as with say, the Kardashians) or doesn’t want it (as is likely the case with Ms. Streisand who probably doesn’t want the attention since she already knows she is a major, beloved star).

Seems pretty silly to me. I’ve always thought New York audiences were not so star-struck, since they often see actors around town and sit next to them when they attend performances. Of course, as with any standing O it just takes one person to get everyone to follow.
