Point taken, but in every other way the number tried to replicate the feel of the movie, so hence the acute sense of feeling of "what, no staircase?". I got showgirls, I got tuxedos, I got a French accent so you can maybe see why I was looking either for a staircase or some level of spectacle. I am all for fresh re-interpretations of classic (or any) material. (I loved THE PRODUCERS and hated YOUNG FRANKENSTEIN for exactly these reasons.) I felt repeatedly that this production wanted to have its own identity (which is great) but on the other hand (for me) it failed to create something both unique and familiar and part of that failure was (again, for me) that it didn't want to hold to some of the things that worked in the movie or find ways to successfully build on them. The brilliance of LION KING as a theatrical endeavor is that it both gives you what you want and what you cannot get from the movie. Honestly, I'm disappointed I didn't love the show, I had a great seat and was really looking forward to it.
