It's obviously much easier to sell out a Broadway theater--even the largest--than the almost 4,000 seat Met but it's my understanding that NO one today--not even Netrebko, Domingo, Fleming--automatically sells out at the Met. Sure, Kaufmann will sell out CARMEN(and then cancel)but I doubt even he sells out whatever opera he's cast in.
It isn't just in Italy that opera stars don't mean the same thing they once did.
