Yes, it takes a while for the audience to realize a big celebrity is there. Lucille Ball at "La Cage" also received a standing ovation at the top of the second act.

The only time I can remember someone getting a standing ovation before the overture was Hillary Clinton at "South Pacific" in 2008.
