Astaire nominations salute fancy footwork, but are there missteps?

Posted by: WaymanWong 12:23 am EDT 05/05/15

I'm glad that the Astaire Awards are around to celebrate dance on Broadway, especially in such a dance-rich season. Naturally, such terrific performers, like Robert Fairchild, Megan Fairchild, Leanne Cope and Tony Yazbeck, are on the list. But I always find the Astaire nominations an odd mix because they include lead roles AND ensemble ones.

* For instance, is it really fair to have Robert Fairchild, the star of ''An American in Paris,'' or Tony Yazbeck, the star of ''On the Town,'' compete with ONE of the porters in ''On the 20th Century''? In fact, how do you single out one of the porters (Phillip Attmore, Rick Faugno, Drew King and Richard Riaz Yoder)?
I wish the Astaire Awards had recognized this foursome as a unit and given them a special honor instead.
(In the past, the Astaire Awards have nominated the male dancers of ''Memphis'' and the female dancers of ''Fela!'' And when they had a chance to salute a true ensemble, like the newsboys in ''Newsies,'' they singled out only a handful of them.)

* If Christian Borle gets singled out for ''Something Rotten!,'' why not Max von Essen in ''An American in Paris'' (who headlines ''I'll Build a Stairway to Paradise'')? Or the young Anton and Claire (John Riddle, Michelle Ventimilla) in ''The Visit''? I also thought Matt Morrison was quick on his feet as J.M. Barrie in ''Finding Neverland.''

* I am glad, however, to see some recognition for Steven Hoggett's fine work in ''The Last Ship'' and Warren Carlyle's in ''On the Twentieth Century.''
