Sweeping statements like the ones you have made are absurd. There are plenty of examples from the golden era (30's to 60's) and even more from the 70's to 80's of shows that were kept running by producers who either thought their fortunes would turn around or who were willing to take a loss so their show could get exposure -- read Mandlebaum's NOT SINCE CARRIE and Suskin's SECOND ACT TROUBLES for specifics, also Suskin's OPENING NIGHTS books.

SIDE SHOW doesn't belong in your category. It only ran 9-1/2 weeks (3 of which were previews -- mostly with grosses in the mid-400K range, which was below nut but not insurmountable.) Its final 2 weeks were successful -- 588K and 810.5K, after which it closed.
