Antonio Ghiringhelli, head of La Scala in the 1950s, was very interested in doing REGINA with Maria Callas, Bernstein conducting. Victor De Sabata was also a big fan of the piece and would play it from memory at parties. This was before Blitzstein turned the Broadway version into the opera house version and he was prepared to set all the spoken dialogue to music. There was some discussion as to whether to do it in English (Callas' native language) or Italian. The failure to come up with a satisfactory translation was one factor in the plan being dropped.

I don't know if Rall did any other full opera, though he used to sing arias at parties.

Many female opera singers can belt pretty high, although many are loathe to do it for fear of creating a hole in the voice. Karen Ziemba's grandmother Winifred Heidt was a well-known mezzo who later did musicals regionally, including Madame Rose. Soprano Barbara Daniels played Dolly and Rose in Austria, directed by no less than Brigitta Fassbaender!
