There was a Broadway version back in 1946....

....that faded very quickly, unfortunately. That show starred Joy Hodges -- and had a score by Johnny Burke and Jimmy Van Heusen. It lasted for only 16 performances.

The Broadway "Nellie Bly" also marked the seventh and final teaming of the famous duo of William Gaxton and Victor Moore.

Many say this show was a sufferer of two curses: the "Hot Air Balloon" curse (which argued that most shows featuring a hot air balloon in the story or scenery had short or unremarkable runs -- think "Around the World," "The Golden Apple," and "By the Beautiful Sea) and the "Adelphi Theatre" curse.

One of the reviews called it a "costly, cumbersome, and completely lifeless show." Even so, I would love to hear some of the score, as I am a great admirer of the songs co-written by the team of Burke & Van Heusen !!
