If you look at past list of winners, it seems actors typically get two bits at the apple. If they have a breakout Off-Broadway in their first "reviewable role," they can win it then. Their Broadway debut is another opportunity (hence Geneva Carr, responding to the OP's question.) This is clearly an odd case, because this is the same role in a production that moved from Off-Broadway to Broadway. But it's more art than science.
