The Pulitzer Just Doesn't Mean That Much Anymore

With the rise of regional theatres and the marginalization of drama on Broadway, the Pulitzer Prize has ceased to be important enough to "make" a play. Arguably the only play in the last decade or so to win the Pulitzer which made a big impression on the general public and has some lasting value is "August: Osage County." "Top Dog," "Anna and the Tropics," and, especially, "The Flick," no matter what you think of them, are all niche pieces: they appeal to a small (discerning?) audience, but do not have the power -- and have not been presented on a platform -- to carry them further. So where is the lasting stuff coming from? Cable TV I'd argue. "The Sopranos," "Mad Men" and "Breaking Bad" are, for my pesos, more involving than "Dog/Anna/Flick etc," and stand a better chance of lasting. And who's writing most of these shows? Playwrights. Perhaps there ought to be a Pulitzer for television.
