"The Laziness of Bernard Shaw"

Posted by: singleticket 12:18 am EDT 05/06/15

Of all artistic tasks, there is none more difficult than the architectonic task of building a play; but, of all literary exercises, there is none more easy than to pen an endless stream of incoherent dialogue. For Mr. Shaw, the task of writing dialogue is even exceptionally easy, because he has a special gift for witty conversation. The dialogue of his indolent and sloppy pieces is fully as amusing as that of his other and earlier plays which are worthy of respect because of the dignity of their construction.

- Clayton Hamilton, "The Laziness of Bernard Shaw" in SEEN ON THE STAGE, Henry Holt & Co., 1920.
