There were - what? - more than two dozen numbers in After Midnight? Nearly every single one a showstopper and plenty of non-tap dance, too. There were so many beautiful moments of movement in that show - what percentage of them were staged entirely by Carlyle I can't say - but (a). he was smart to hire not only great triple threats, but many dancers who were true specialists and could bring their authentic style and, apparently, steps to the table. (b). even if he only staged 80% of the evening, it was still a great accomplishment and, easily, the best choreography of the season.

That bizarre funeral dance with the broad hopping around on one leg for twenty minutes?

The unfocused, jumble of a finale?

Check out the SOPHISTICATED LADIES video if you want an example of what a show like this OUGHT to look like. The band sounded terrific and of course the songs ARE truly great so since Broadway is starved for that naturally the audience and most critics responded.

But this show was the emperors new clothes to me. And the four people I attended with agreed. We were all scratching our heads. The four tap numbers (not by Warren) were great. The point of my original post.
