I have no idea if this is true but, when the York did "Regina" in 2001 as a "Mufti," someone--either the director or musical director--said at the talkback that DeSabata wanted Tebaldi for Birdie alongside Callas as Regina. Of course, that would have had to have been in Italian translation. And, even if Desabata said it, he could just have been joking or, at least, indulging in ATC speculation. It also could have been early in the '50s before "the feud" became the big PR it eventually did.
