Maybe. In the early '50s Ghiringhelli was always hoping to pair Callas and Tebaldi, which would have been box office gold. He thought of DIE WALKÜRE in Italian (La Valkyria) with Tebaldi as Sieglinde (that I can see), or NORMA with her as Adalgisa (I can't see Big Renata agreeing to seconda donna status) or the two alternating as Adalgisa and Norma (Tebaldi knew she couldn't manage the latter role). REGINA in Italian with the two of them would certainly have been, um, innnteresting! I imagine Tebaldi might have been squeamish about playing a messy drunk! ATC in Italian? Tutto Quello Chiachierare!

That Mufti REGINA was rather wrong-headed, I thought. The great Jack Lee, musical director, said it was his mission to "rescue" the piece from the world of opera, and he cast singing actors. Everyone was game but even in piano-only concert form I felt much of the power of the piece was lost. I saw the matinee with Anne Bobby, but in the evening show the legit-voiced Tracey Moore (RAGTIME) played Regina and showed what had been missing. It is an OPERA not a musical, and no apologies need be made for that.
