Today Tix for On The Town?

Posted by: DistantDrumming 07:03 am EDT 05/06/15

Hey All. Looks like I might be in NY next week for work. Been dying to see On the Town. Anyone here used Today Tix for On the Town? Did you win the lottery or did you purchase the discounted tickets through the app? Either way, were you happy with your seats/the experience or do you think one would have just as good luck with similarly priced tickets at the TKTS booth?

If you've used Today Tix for other shows, feel free to share your experience as well. I don't think they were in existence the last time I was in NY.

I hate Today Tix lottery, I have not won once, whereas in at theater lotteries, I have always been lucky.

I have tried to use their app for quite a few of their lotteries, many times over. While it's a nice idea, I have never won. They usually only have a couple of lottery seats available (for Hamilton, it was only 2 per performance).

They also charge $10 per ticket for the service and it's luck of the draw as to where your seats are. For me, I'd rather skip the $10/ticket fee, find a decent discount code, and go directly to the box office and know where I'm sitting (since that is exactly what they do).

It should be noted that the $10 does not apply for lottery tickets. At least it didn't when I won for On the Town a few months ago.

I agree that going to the box office with a discount code can get you the same or better seats without a fee. I've only used TodayTix when I have people in town visiting and we are spending the day away from midtown and decide to see a show that evening. Getting to the box office can take time away from what we're doing during the day, and buying from the Telecharge or Ticketmaster mobile sites takes several minutes. With TodayTix we can see what's available for every show, get a reasonable idea of where the seats will be, and make the purchase in just a minute or two. Worth the $10/ticket fee for me in those cases.

Any discount code tips for OTT?

Since you mentioned it... for an out-of-towner who isn't a member of any orgs like TDF, that is. Anything as good or better than what one can find on Today Tix or at the TKTS booth?

The discount code that is out there now (the only one I can find, at any rate) is for $79 - $109. Geez... $109 is the discounted price. It's currently on TKTS for 50% off, so you'll get a better price there.

I've had a bunch of friends win their lotteries--On The Town and Fun Home (never Hamilton).

I've heard from the box offices at both, that there are 20-30 tickets per performance.

As per the fees/location, I've gotten great seats in the few times I've used them. The agent told me that they get the best available tickets at the time of your purchase directly from the box office, so obviously if its a hot show and there aren't any good seats left at the box office, TodayTix isnt going to miraculously have great seats. It's just best avail when you buy them.

OTT Lottery

I won the Today Tix lottery for On The Town. My seats were in the boxes on the side, but unlike those seats at other theaters, I thought the sightlines were excellent. (I was roughly as far back in the house as the first row of the orchestra behind the break.) Certainly can't beat the price, but obviously you can't count on winning the lottery. I believe they do determine the results early enough for you to buy tickets another way if you don't win.

I bought my tickets for On the Town through TodayTix, and I was very happy with my seats. I opted for orchestra level and ended up with an excellent pair, about halfway back, two seats off the center aisle.

I've used TodayTix about a dozen times. I love how hassle-free the experience is: no waiting in line at TKTS or the box office; basically just walking to the theatre and being handed your tickets. I've only had one negative experience--the tickets I ordered ended up being partial view, although it was never communicated that this was a possibility. However, their customer service following this was excellent, as they offered me a voucher to use for a future show. Like many young companies, they're very eager and customer-friendly.

I paid $79 + a $5 service fee (total = $84). According to Ticketmaster, the seat I sat in is usually priced $140.50.
