It's a very good production of a mediocre (at best) musical. The Encores! presentation of ZORBA was my first encounter with the work and I thought the book was weak and the score largely self-derivative.

Fontana and Wanamaker give lovely performances and Mazzie is terrific -- particularly her opening number. Turturro, however, didn't strike me as an ideal Zorba; a more low-key than larger-than-life characterization.

While it has much to recommend it, this ZORBA is one of those Encores! productions that provides evidence as to why the show wasn't originally successful.
